Between 1923 and 1961 an institution for ”morally defective” girls was located on Sprogø.
The lighthouse from 1868 was built on remains of the old castle dating to 1167, erected by Valdemar the Great
Valdemar the Great chose to place a castle on Sprogø in the middle of the 12th century.
Sprogø ligger lige midt mellem Fyn og Sjælland, men i renæssancen var øen bestyret fra Nyborg.
